Aside of Facebook and YouTube, GMail seems to be the next growing thing. Although it is only in BETA version, it still offers many special features reffered to as "Labs." These are frequently updated by the GMail Team, and are free for you to fully use. Here are some screenshots of the GMail service:

This is the list of folders-- as you can see, there is a large variety of different places to file these emails.
Aside of GMail chat, you can also go 'invisible' to turn the green dot next to your name from green to gray. This makes it seem as if you are not online.

As you can see, I get emails when someone posts on the blog!

Labs? I use gmail.com all the time, but like you wrote, it gets updated all the time.
